This is a ready-to-play example character built step-by-step using the Void Pirates Core Rules. Perfect for new players or quick one-shots.

Step 1: Basic Info

Name: Jax
Age: 25 (Backstory XP from age 15–24 = 10 years × 6 XP = 60 XP)
Gender: Male
Gravity Rating (GR): Hopper (0.4–0.6G)
Background: Born on a low-G asteroid hab in the Luyten Empire. Served as a boarding marine before going independent mercenary/pirate.
Role in crew: Agile gunner, zero-G breacher, scout/pilot.

Step 2: Roll Attributes (3d6 each)

Roll or assign (example rolls shown – roll your own!)

  • Strength (STR): 10
  • Agility (AGL): 16
  • Intellect (INT): 11
  • Health (HLTH): 14
  • Personality (PER): 12

Step 3: Apply GR Modifier (Hopper)
Hopper mods: STR –1, INT +1, HLTH –1

Final attributes:

  • STR: 10 – 1 = 9
  • AGL: 16 (no mod)
  • INT: 11 + 1 = 12
  • HLTH: 14 – 1 = 13
  • PER: 12 (no mod)

Step 4: Attribute Modifiers (AtMod = score ÷ 3, round up)

  • STR 9 → +3
  • AGL 16 → +6
  • INT 12 → +4
  • HLTH 13 → +5
  • PER 12 → +4

Step 5: Health Points
Health Points (HP) = final HLTH × 2 = 13 × 2 = 26 HP

Step 6: Spend Backstory XP (60 XP total)
Jax spends his Backstory XP (see age) to boost key stats and buy starting skills (costs from core rules).

  • Raise AGL from 16 to 17: 12 XP (max +1 at creation)
    → New AGL 17 → AtMod +6 (unchanged, still rounds to +6)
  • Skills (all Average unless noted):
    • Ranged Combat (Average, AGL) Rank 3: 6 + 9 + 12 = 27 XP
    • Zero-G (Average, AGL) Rank 2: 6 + 9 = 15 XP
    • Piloting (Difficult, AGL) Rank 1: 12 XP
    • Stealth (Difficult, AGL) Rank 1: 12 XP (but only 60 total – adjust if needed)

Remaining XP: 60 – 12 (AGL) – 27 (Ranged) – 15 (Zero-G) – 12 (Piloting) = -6 (over by 6 – drop Stealth Rank 1 or reduce Ranged to Rank 2 for balance).

Final Skills (balanced example):

  • Ranged Combat Rank 3 (+3 SRM)
  • Zero-G Rank 2 (+2 SRM)
  • Piloting Rank 1 (+1 SRM, Difficult)
  • Stealth Rank 1 (+1 SRM, Difficult)

Character Total Skill Rank (TSR): 7

Step 7: Starting Money
Age 25 → base 25 oz gold + (7 years × 1d4)

• Characters age 18 start with 25 oz gold.
• For every year after 18 (ages 19+): Roll 1d4 oz gold and add to total.

Example roll: 7d4 = 18 → 43 oz gold total

Step 8: Buy Gear (from Extended Gear List & Weapons – Costs and Damage)

  • Armored Vac-Suit: 20 oz gold
  • Rail Pistol: 2 oz gold (2d6+2, ignores half AV)
  • Vibro-Short Sword: 2.8 oz gold (3d6 vorpal)
  • Breather Mask: 0.7 oz gold
  • Grapnel Launcher: 1.8 oz gold
  • Medkit: 1 oz gold
  • Total spent: ~28.3 oz gold
  • Cash left: ~14.7 oz gold (for ammo, bribes, drinks)
